Western Sydney is dominated by concrete tile roofs on brick veneer homes built from the 1960s onward, plus a large volume of newer estates with lighter-coloured tile and metal roofs.
The defining local factor is heat. Summer temperatures out west regularly run far above the coastal suburbs, and that daily expansion and contraction is brutal on rigid mortar, sealants and metal fixings.
