Gutters look simple and fail in complicated ways. A gutter can be perfectly intact and still overflow because it has no fall, or be full of holes at the back where nobody can see it. What you notice is usually water where it should not be: down the wall, over the front door, or into the eaves.

Isolated damage — one split join, a single crushed section, a bracket that has let go — is straightforward to repair. Once rust is appearing at multiple points along a run, patching buys months rather than years, because the metal has thinned everywhere.

Water spilling behind a gutter runs into the fascia and the top plate, rotting timber and staining internal cornices. In heavy Sydney downpours it can also overshoot the first row of tiles, entering the roof space directly.
Gutter overflow is also the most common cause of damp along external walls and eroded garden beds against the house.
