Why leaf litter causes so much damage

Wet leaf litter holds moisture against metal, which is how valleys and gutters rust from the inside out. It also composts into a silt layer that blocks flow long after the leaves themselves have broken down.

In a valley, even a partial dam pushes water sideways under the tiles, where it soaks battens and finds its way into the ceiling. Clearing it takes minutes; the resulting repair does not.
