Getting the sizing right

Capacity depends on the roof area draining into the gutter, the pitch of that roof, the gutter profile and the number and size of downpipes. Undersized systems look fine for months and then overflow the first time a proper storm arrives.

Adding a room or a patio roof increases the catchment feeding an existing gutter. That is why extensions so often cause overflow at a spot that never had a problem before.

Installation details that matter

• Consistent fall to the outlets, without dips that hold water
• Bracket spacing appropriate to the profile and to expected leaf load
• Correctly sized and positioned downpipes, connected to legal stormwater
• Overflow provision so a blockage discharges outside rather than into the eaves
• Compatible metals at every junction to avoid accelerated corrosion
• Proper sealing of mitres, stop ends and outlets

If you are planning a tank, tell us before installation. Downpipe positions, first-flush provision and gutter cleanliness all matter more once you are collecting drinking or garden water, and it is far easier to plan than to retrofit.
