The Lower North Shore holds some of Sydney's best-preserved Federation and interwar housing, much of it under original terracotta or slate, and much of it beneath mature trees.
Leaf litter is the constant here. Valleys and gutters on these roofs fill quickly, and the resulting rust and water backup causes more leaks locally than any storm does.
Ryde is largely post-war brick with concrete tile roofs, on blocks generous enough to carry mature trees — which is exactly the combination that fills valleys and gutters.
Chatswood has a high-density commercial and residential core surrounded by established houses, many of them Federation and interwar with original terracotta.
Lane Cove backs onto bushland and creek reserves, so roofs here carry a constant load of gum leaves, bark and seed pods. Valleys and gutters need clearing far more often than most owners expect.
Mosman combines heritage housing, steep harbourside blocks and salt exposure — three factors that each complicate roofing work and often appear together on the same job.
