The Shire runs from the exposed coastline at Cronulla through bay-side suburbs on the Georges River to bush-edged streets near the Royal National Park. Roofing conditions change noticeably across that span.
Near the water, corrosion dominates. Further inland, the issues are the familiar ones for post-war brick-and-tile housing: failing pointing, tired valleys and gutters at the end of their life.
Cronulla sits fully exposed to the coast, and salt does more damage to roofs here than storms do. Gutters, valleys, screws and flashings corrode quickly, especially on elevations sheltered from rain.
Miranda is solidly post-war residential, with concrete tile roofs on brick homes and a commercial centre with flat metal roofs.
Caringbah stretches from the highway down to the bay, and the roofs closest to the water show noticeably faster corrosion in gutters, valleys and fixings.
Sutherland sits close to the bushland edge of the Royal National Park, and roofs on that side of the suburb carry a serious leaf load through most of the year.
