The Upper North Shore is Sydney's most heavily treed residential belt, and roofs here spend their lives under gum litter. Valleys, gutters and box gutters fill continuously, and the ember risk on bush-adjacent properties makes that debris a safety issue as well as a drainage one.
The housing is generous in scale — large Federation and interwar homes with steep, complicated roof geometry, plus substantial post-war and modern houses on bush blocks.
Epping sits under significant tree cover, and the practical consequence for roofs is relentless debris. Valleys, gutters and downpipe outlets fill faster here than in most of Sydney.
Hornsby sits on the bush edge, and roofs here deal with two related problems: an enormous volume of gum leaf and bark litter, and the ember risk that comes with it during fire season.
